Writing about wine is like releasing stories from a bottle, stories that are bottled over time, that are released with pleasure, just like when we open a special wine.

This article is dedicated to a distinguished wine producer - Joaquim Arnaud, a businessman with noble roots and a very old family legacy dedicated to the land and with a presence in Vila de Pavia for more than 500 years.

X

He was born in 1973, a descendant of the Counts of Arundel, who came from England to Portugal with the task of escorting D. Filipa de Lencastre. Currently, he explores 850 hectares of fertile land in the Alentejo region (in the cities of Mora and Arraiolos, Évora), where he produces from vineyards to wine, cow ham and Alentejo pork, including pork sausages.

Joaquim Arnaud is passionately convinced of the benefits of sustainable agriculture, “because the land does not belong to us, it belongs to our children”, he explains whenever he is questioned.

X

His skills and the knowledge he acquired, resulted a lot from reading books from his ancestors who since 1880 recorded everything about sowing, among other issues inherent to farming.

X

In 2001, Joaquim Arnaud planted the Aragonês, Trincadeira, Syrah and Alicante Bouschet grape varieties. These are used in Arundel wines: Arundel Red Wine Tradition 2015 (this with an innovative and water-resistant label) and / or Arundel Red Wine Number Four 2014 (link to products).

In the future, he plans to use the white grape varieties Arinto and Chardonnay in wines with the same label.

But Joaquim Arnaud's irreverent and innovative character, as a wine producer, and the temptation to always promote wine experiences, means that this producer does not conform to what his land gives and seeks other final products in other regions.

X

The Sparkling Wine Joaquim Arnaud 2015 is a good example. After having produced with Lisbon grape varieties, and then from the Bairrada Region, he made the decision of exploring the Vinho Verde Region.

X

It is a Sparkling Super Reserva Brut Natur 2015, made with Alvarinho and Trajadura two indigenous grape varieties from the Demarcated Region of Vinhos Verdes, a special edition with only 1900 numbered bottles that results from a project articulated with Adega de Monção.

X

And why Monção? "Because the winery is 500 meters from the bridge where the marriage contract between D. João I and D. Filipa de Lencastre was signed."
